Animals have thoughts and feelings - We just need to pay more attention.
This isn't to suggest that we weren't all aware of the fact that our pets and all animals have thoughts and feelings. It's about the fact that they are often ignored. Yes, they feel the full gambit of emotions, just as we do. In fact, they make it pretty obvious most of the time and we simply pass it off because they're pets and they'll be fine. They can't verbalize what they feel and need so we tend to convince ourselves that they'll be just fine. Yes, some people spoil their pets and simply give them whatever they want to make them happy 24/7 but that's not what they need. They need structure and discipline just like children do, but they also need attention regarding things that are bothering them, their fears, their insecurities and especially related to their health. If you really want to do what's right by your pets, start paying attention to those subtle little things that they do. If you find yourself asking the question "what is it, boy?" or "what's the matter girl?"...there's usually a good reason for it, they're trying to tell you something.
